This article focuses in the Martha Graham Centennial Celebration. Five days before the Martha Graham Dance Co. opened the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM), the dancers decided to strike. Two nights later the curtain went up on the New York segment of the Martha Graham Centennial Celebration, a yearlong tribute sponsored by Philip Morris and chaired by Senator Hillary Clinton and the Ambassador to France, Pamela Harriman. Like other aspects of the season, the billing was a marketing ploy to update the company's image for the stylish consumers of BAM's "Next Wave."
