The brawl in the White House and the Democratic Party over the meaning of the November elections began. Conservative Democrats led by operatives in the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) echo Republicans in arguing that the Democratic Party's woes prove that the U.S. President and the party must move to the right to meet the aggressive challenge of the Newt Gingrich Republicans. The DLC people claim that the President get tough on welfare. Cut back on government, except for defense. Advertise the independence by picking fights with labor, Congressional liberals, environmentalists. Give more speeches on personal responsibility and fewer on social programs.
