It's Newt's Day in Congress

Ireland, Doug | December 5, 1994 issue

Newt Gingrich, visibly swelling from the newly captured power, swept back into Washington to be greeted with the kind of media frenzy lately attendant on the press conferences of Robert Shapiro. House Democrats, could be subject to fines and imprisonment if there is any destruction of documents prior to Gingrich's promised independent audit of the House's internal spending practices. The audit designed to uncover every possible example of Democratic filching for a decade, will abet Newt's carefully planned decapitation of U.S. Congressional committee staffs, where Democrats have maintained a lopsided 3-to-1 margin.
