The article focuses on a libel trial at a federal court in San Francisco. Janet Malcolm in her book "The Journalist and the Murderer," portrays journalist Jeffrey Masson as a kind of confident man, preying on people's vanity, ignorance, or loneliness, gaining their trust and betraying them without remorse. Masson claimed in his suit that Malcolm had falsely attributed to him certain quotes, including that of an "intellectual gigolo." Malcolm testified under oath that she remembered the phrase clearly because Masson's speech was so vivid, despite there being no tape, recording of that particular exchange.
