In this article, the author describes his experience in Vietnam in search of American M.I.A.s. Whenever he tried to dig into the question of the Vietnamese M.I.A.s, he would hit ledge, time and again officials would sidestep his question and drift into ceremonial never-never land. In the most irritating instances, the spokesperson would actually shift the focus of his question 180 degrees and start talking about Vietnam's policy toward American M.I.A.s— how the country was bending over backward to help provide the U.S. with a full accounting, and how the Vietnamese people felt great sympathy for the American families.
