This article presents information several books. Some of the books are "Jewish Renewal: A Path to Healing and Transformation," by Michael Lerner and "The Soul of Politics: A Practical and Prophetic Vision for Change," by Jim Wallis. But both oppression and the fight for freedom can march under many banners, including those of divine revelation and scientific truth. But a fundamental weakness running through these works is the assumption that "spiritual tradition and vision" is necessarily positive, and that cases in which religion serves oppression are only a misuse of religious belief. In "Jewish Renewal," Michael Lerner constructs an impassioned yet pragmatic approach to a spiritual revitalization that is at once proud of a group identity while also being outward-focused in its deep concern with the world. Jim Wallis's "The Soul of Politics," also draws from the well of spirituality to replenish social commitment and reestablish community in a society parched by individualized materialistic strivings and denuded of hope by powerful profit-driven elites.
