This article presents information on the book "City on a Hill: Testing the American Dream at City College," by James Traub. his book tells the story of what happens when a Harvard-educated New Yorker writer sits in on remedial classes at City College. Traub begins by recalling New York-based City College's glorious past, when immigrant Jewish geniuses debated literature and politics long into the night. The result, Traub suggests, is that the once-proud City College has become essentially a remedial institution. Traub prides himself on having gotten students to talk to him; the emotional highs in the book come when particular students after a while decide to trust him and tell him their life stories and current problems.
