The author of this article tells a story in which six Mexican emigrants have been charged for murder in Orange County, California. Altogether five out of the six young Mexican men charged in the case face possible lifetimes in prison for Steve Woods's death. Their case has become a dark mirror of class and ethnic polarization in the conservative suburbs of Orange County. Of the nine Mexican youths arrested at their homes or workplaces on October 16, six were ultimately indicted. If sentenced as adults, as anticipated by their families, they face terms in state prison ranging from a statutory minimum of fifteen years to a maximum of life.
