The article presents information on exhibition of Cy Twombly's painting at the Museum of Modern Art. Twombly did a good many blackboard paintings in the late sixties, more than one of them like the painting the author of this article have been discussing. Twombly had settled in Italy in the late 1950s, had married well and was leading rather a princely life. In 1963, he painted a series dedicated to the Roman emperor Commodus, one of the mad, cruel Roman rulers. In opinion of the author of this article blackboard painting induces a certain narrative structure into the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition, the works after and before not being remarkably different.
