The article presents information on the most recent book of Linda Gordon, "Pitied But Not Entitled: Single Mothers and the History of Welfare." The analysis sheds light on the historical forces, the political and economic realities and the individuals that shaped the current welfare system is particularly timely and instructive. Gordon observes that term welfare signifies ill-being, poverty and fatalism. Activists who supported mothers' aid, the precursor to Aid to Dependent Children, were concerned about the childrearing practices of the poor, especially those of new immigrant families. Gordon points out that social security act did not protect American citizens from cruelties of capitalism.
