Several Chinese immigrants may be unlucky to have been the passengers on the ill-fated Golden Venture, which rammed the shore of Queens, New York City more than a year ago. They are detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in lower Manhattan, New York City. Of the 276 Golden Venture inmates, forty are from the Wenzhou area, the rest are from Fuzhou, and twenty-five are from neighboring Jiudu Island. Surprisingly, almost all of the few thousand residents of the region are Christians. They have no contact with American authorities, and the Chinese government has maintained strict silence on the matter.
