Using the name Jane Doe, a Chicago-area woman is accusing Wyeth-Ayerst, the company that markets Norplant in the United States, of negligence for failing to warn women that removing the implant can be painful and difficult. Jane Doe, who got the implant in 1991, alleges that on three occasions in 1992, doctors couldn't locate the six matchstick-size rods lodged in her arm to remove them. She also suffered side-effects including bleeding, nausea, weight gain and severe headaches. The plaintiff's attorney, Jewel Klein, has filed a class-action suit in Cook County Circuit Court, Chicago.
