This article focuses on the book "Mortgaging the Earth: The World Bank, Environmental Impoverishment, and the Crisis of Development," by Bruce Rich, with specific reference to the world Bank and environmental protection. Rich's new, unofficial history of the World Bank, Mortgaging the Earth was released to coincide with the bank's birthday, which is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. Rich wryly concludes that the bank's environmental disasters have given it a chance to move more money. But the World Bank's environmental projects won't do much good if they are only attempts to mitigate the ecological damage done by bigger bank projects.
