On the day of the May 4 ceremony in Cairo marking the signing of the Gaza-Jericho agreement Peace Now, held a demonstration on the Gaza-Israeli border to mark the historic occasion. "We have been waiting twenty-seven years for this day to come," professor Galia Golan from the Hebrew University said on behalf of the organizers. At the end of the demonstration, the hymn of the Israeli peace movement was sung and Israelis and Palestinians danced together. A group of young Gaza Palestinians, who were unable to get a permit to join the demonstration because of the emergency measure barring Palestinians from coming to work in Israel, waved Palestinian and Israeli flags on their side of the fenced-in border.
