This article focuses on the book "My Daughter, the Teacher: Jewish Teachers in the New York City," written by Ruth Jacknow Markowitz. The story of the members of the Teachers Union as well as those of many other, less politically oriented teachers provides the subject of Ruth Jacknow's book. The book, as well as being a compelling history of the entry of Jewish women into the New York City public schools from the 1920s on, raises important questions about ethnicity and community that every urban and most rural school districts now face.
