The article focuses on the book "Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us," by Kate Bornstein. This book is a radical document, even though it falters as a literary and intellectual work. Bornstein-who has chosen gender reassignment surgery and who describes herself as a transsexual lesbian whose female lover is becoming a man seeks to challenge a bipolar gender system. But if Bornstein challenges the social construction of transsexual identity, she does not reject transsexuality itself. "Gender Outlaw," is situated at a point equidistant from the memoir and the work of cultural analysis, but it often reads like a self-help book.
