The article focuses on Elvis Costello, a music performer. Costello actually wrote songs, often with highly torqued and developed melodies. This was just lone of the ways he was starkly different from most of his confreres in punk and post-punk. Helped by his knock-kneed poses and his Buddy Holly nerd look, he managed to bring it off with just enough ferocity to undercut any potential criticisms of himself as pop wimp who'd walked out of the magic circle of three chords defined by the Ramones and Sex Pistols. INSET: Rycodisk reissues, by G.S..
