The article focuses on the emergence of third-party politics in the U.S. According to the author, the murky and evanescent world of third-party politics has been infused with new urgency, especially around the prospect of attracting some of the 19.7 million voters who voted for Ross Perot, a U.S. presidential candidate. Connecticut Governor Lowell Weicker,1980 independent presidential candidate John Anderson, former Hawaii Representative Cecil Heftel and Lionel Kuntz of the Coalition to End the Permanent Congress, announced the formation of the Independence Party.
