The article focuses on the U.S. military intervention in various parts of the world. Anyone who thinks that the lesson of Vietnam is the avoidance of awkward overseas commitments has accepted a gross rewriting of history and is cloaking right-wing isolationism in a white flag. A qualitative wrong turn was taken during the Gulf War, when most critics and opponents took refuge in the safe option of the "body bag" argument. In the post-cold war and -Gulf War world, therefore, it has already been demonstrated that enlightened pressure can to some extent help to redeploy military force, for defensible purposes, in an intelligent and limited way.
