This article discusses several developments from the motion picture industry including the film "Crooklyn," directed by Spike Lee. Having long resisted the impulse to be sincere, and autobiographical, Lee has now taken the risk, at rather an advanced age, of filming a rambling memoir about his family and neighbors in Brooklyn during the early 1970s. Set on a block of row houses in New York's Bedford-Stuyvesant section, the film tells a common-enough story about lower-middle-class life grown tense from economic strain. In May, at the International Festival of Film in Cannes, the Europeans and Asians, who do not run the movie business but wish they did spend twelve days pretending to be interested in art, then wind up giving their top prize to the producer Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction."
