The musical comedy is one of America's few indigenous art forms. But a review of the current crop of what's on Broadway-a list top-heavy with revivals and short on new works would seem to confirm the long-held notion that the golden age of the musical peaked three decades ago. For a sense of where the musical was and how it has been evolving in the past thirty years, one need only consider the work of Stephen Sondheim, whose newest, "Passion," opened on Broadway only a few weeks after the arrival of Disney's mega-musical, "Beauty and the Beast." Although Sondheim has always been too uncompromising an artist to, but with "Passion," one detects a striving for accessibility, perhaps even popularity, lacking in earlier efforts.
