This article critically appraises the book "A Rebel in Defence of Tradition: The Life and Politics of Dwight Macdonald," by Michael Wreszin. Dwight Macdonald's efforts to get a grip on his demons are not scanted in Michael Wreszin's ambitious biography, which dips into the font of self-analysis provided by Macdonald's personal journals again and again without, however, obtaining much of a sounding. He was close to a nervous breakdown, as Wreszin points out in the footnotes that carry these plaintive entries.
