This article focuses on the book "The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness," by Paul Gilroy. He reads Western rationality through its great "exception:' ruthlessly documenting its consequences for Afro-Americans, and concludes that slavery and racial terror were not flaws in the post-Enlightenment scheme but its necessary condition. Modern life, in other words, begins not with realist art, nor with industrial technology, not even with factory labor, but with the slave ship. The book delineate the diaspora's decisive contributions to life in the West, an active countercultural legacy of the utmost sophistication.
