The original idea behind this nationally promoted Ms. Foundation project was that spending a day on the job with a mother or other close adult would help adolescent girls see that wink is an integral part of women's lives, and expose them to women who are doing interesting real-life jobs. If a girl's mother is a construction worker or a professor or a tuba player, it's a safe bet her daughter already sees the advantage of bucking gender stereo-types. This year the Ms. Foundation seems to have retooled the original concept. The emphasis is less on exciting role models and more on the neglected needs of the girls themselves, particularly in the self-esteem category.
