This article presents information on the issue of value, rights and responsibilities, unity and diversity, individualism and group identity among Americans in the U.S. Sheldon Hackney, head of the National Endowment for the Humanities (N.E.H.), has called for a national conversation, to be funded by the N.E.H. and carried out in schools, libraries, museums and state humanities councils around the country, that will take up the issue of what it means to be an American. He is been going around the media chatting up his plan, and if his appearance on the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour in May 1994, was any indication, he has got some exciting evenings for everyone.
