This article presents information on the foreign policy of the U.S. particularly towards China. U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, went to China to underscore the Administration's call for "overall, significant progress" on human rights as a condition for the U.S. President William John Clinton's renewal of trading privileges. The Secretary was rebuffed by the Chinese-though they gave him a few crumbs of information about prisoners-showing that their determination to deny any space for dissent exceeds even their dedication to economic self-.interest, or, more likely, that they do not believe William John Clinton has the determination to adhere to the condition that he himself set when he renewed most favored nation trading status in 1993.
