This article presents information on the issue of drug control in the U.S. According to the authors although the strategies of interdiction, penalization and propaganda have largely failed to stop aggregate consumption of controlled substances in America, the war on drugs is poised to strike against the most dangerous addiction of all. Smoking is under wide attack on several fronts. Proposals are before Congress to raise cigarette taxes to confiscatory levels, which would also help finance health reform. The Defense Department is banning smoking in all its facilities. The Food and Drug Administration is trial-ballooning the idea of regulating nicotine as a drug. Representative Henry Waxman wants a federal ban on smoking in virtually every indoor space. And Labor Secretary Robert Reich plans to prohibit smoking in every workplace, with Occupational Safety and Health Administration agents doing the enforcing.
