this article presents information on television broadcasting in the U.S. The television network CBS could hardly have contravened the' American sports-.journalism edict of "Godding Up" the spectacle and presented the world's pre-eminent athletic event for its own sake. With all the attention, the Olympics became a backdrop for the Harding-Kerrigan competition and CBS won the prize: the highest ratings in the history of the games. In this the Olympics were only following the evolution of American sports. Shortly before the games began PBS featured a new documentary called Power Plays. The film is frequently moralizing and underreported.
