This article critically appraises the book "Live From the Battlefield: From Vietnam to Baghdad: 35 Years in the World's War Zones," by Peter Arnett. Arnett flung himself out in the world at a time when a hungry reporter could always find work. This is not the case today, when interviews are done in Human Resources offices, when the inexperienced are tested before they have the chance, as Arnett once did, to learn in the field. Nearly all privately owned small newspapers have disappeared. Arnett's success depends not only on his talent as a writer, his persistence and his miraculous metabolism but on a deep belief that an accurate record must be kept and that he is the man to do it, even now at the age of 59.
