The article focuses on the author Reinaldo Arenas of the book "Before Night Falls: A Memoir." When Arenas committed suicide in 1990, Cuban-American writers across the country, but especially in Miami, wrote eloquent homages in the newspapers. They waxed about Arenas' great love of Cuba, the way he in so many ways a product of Cuban political leader Fidel Castro's revolution had been so hideously betrayed, and how he suffered here in the U.S. Most of these obituaries accepted the premise of Arenas' suicide note that if he hadn't had to come to the U.S., he probably wouldn't have caught AIDS and let Castro take responsibility for his death.
