In the summer of 1981, the memory of Eli Hazeev was still green. "Hazeev" is the Hebrew for "wolf" and was the adopted surname of James Mahon Jr. Mahon was an American drifter, damaged goods from the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he had wasted some time on the neo-Nazi fringe of the U.S., looking for a chance to get nasty and get even. Tiring of this, he had converted to Judaism, changed his name to Hazeev immigrated to Israel, joined Rabbi Meir Kahane's Kach movement, settled in Hebron and been given a gun all with no questions asked. Having been known to the police in Washington as "Crazy Jimmy," he blended right into the Hebron scene. Of course, even in such places there are grades and distinctions, and there were denizens of the Kiryat Arba settlement culture who thought of "the wolf" as a touch on the extreme side.
