The article critically appraises two books. "Failing at Fairness: How America's Schools Cheat Girls," by Myra and David Sadker and "Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School," by Barrie Thorne. The book by Sadker's is a catalogue of the subtle and insidious ways that sexism thrives in classrooms around the country, from elementary school through higher education and beyond to the working world. Thorne's book discusses the construction of gender roles through kids' interactions with one another, both in and out of the classroom.
