The article focuses on the book "Atomic Harvest: Hanford and the Lethal Toll of America's Nuclear Arsenal," by Michael D'Antonio. D'Antonio tells the stories of the men and women who fought to uncover the truth about Hanford, Washington, where radioactive substances are processed. Among them are Tom Bailie, the farmer who lived downwind; Karen Dorn Steele, the reporter for the Spokane Spokesman-Review who first exposed Hanford's history. The book presents the harmful effect of the nuclear substances. On a deeper level, the book engages us in watching loyal and patriotic citizens transformed to political activists.
