This article focuses on the book "Forcing the Spring: The Transformation of the American Environmental Movement," by Robert Gottlieb. As Gottlieb shows, the issues of environmental justice have been with us at least since the Industrial Revolution, just as racial, sexual and ethnic discrimination merely took on new forms as modern industry evolved. Gottlieb reaches back into the history of American environmentalism to reveal some strikingly logical reasons for the seemingly indifferent response to the movement by those outside the white middle and upper classes.
