Amid an ecstatic buzz of economic activity that has made the People's Republic of China the world's fastest-growing major economy, the country's physical landscape has been transmogrified with breathtaking speed. China's water supply is similarly fouled. In 1990, only 32 percent of China's industrial waste water was properly treated. The rest simply poured into rivers and streams, rendering 82 percent of urban waterways unsafe for swimming or fishing. Three-quarters of China's energy needs are met by burning coal, much of it dirty, high-sulfur stuff that generates copious amounts of airborne pollution.
