On January 3, 1993, the Los Angeles Times published his one-line letter McCarthyism is alive and well. It is now called sexual harassment. Bobby Inman's idea of NewMc was of course the entirely factual attack on his record by William Safire. Ironically, it turns out that Safire himself is one of Inman's early polemical antecedents. Many of those complaining most loudly about new McCarthyism are right-wingers who thought the old McCarthyism was just fine. In 1980 former Treasury Secretary William Simon warned in the Heritage Foundation Policy Review of the new McCarthyism of the anti-business culture victimizing big oil companies.
