On January 18, Vice Adm. Bobby Ray Inman, announcing his decision not to pursue confirmation as Secretary of Defense, accused New York Times columnist William Safire of plagiarism. On Ted Koppel's Nightline, Inman backed away from the charge, saying he had no evidence in hand and that if his allegation was not true, he wished to apologize to Safire. Safire in his column of January 20 continued pummeling Inman, but also devoted considerable space to defending himself against the charge of plagiarism.
