The article presents critical analysis of several books. The book " Releasing Serpents," by Bernice Zamora, contains selections from her first book, some previously uncollected work from journals and thirty new poems. What makes her short, imagistic poems so magnificent is the way she captures decades-old history, then thrusts it forward into the present without hesitation to grasp the larger world. Zamora does not offer easy choices. The poetic sequences, divided into seven sections in the book, can be read chronologically or at random.
