The article presents information on the U.S. senate bill Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1953." It would undercut the historic right of the states to determine their own criminal justice standards and priorities, and undermine the intent of other, more progressive federal legislation. Its fifty-one separate titles range from vast increases in spending for police and prisons, to a passel of new death-penalty crimes, to the creation of five federal commissions to examine various aspects of violent crime and a report on efforts to hire former Hong Kong police officers in federal law enforcement jobs.
