The article critically appraises the book "The Exile: Cuba in the Heart of Miami," by David Rieff. In his book Rieff attempts to analyze the labyrinthine ambivalence of Cubans and Cuban-Americans--first-, second- and third-generation exiles in Florida torn between an imagined Eden left behind and their present status as secure U.S. citizens. With a commanding voice, Rieff helps the reader understand the nuances that distinguish this particular segment of the Hispanic minority in the U.S. from other Spanish speakers. The Exile's vertebral characters are Paul and Ninon Rodriguez, Miami siblings a few years older than Rieff whose opinions are used to represent those of the entire Cuban community in exile.
