This article presents various minority reports concerning the a previously published symposium, in this journal, on the grave implications of everything after the imposition of martial law in Poland in 1982. Responses were made vivacious by author Susan Sontag's assertion that martial law was the end of the road for the Soviet system and for the culture of euphemism that infected, in some quarters at any rate, the discussion of that system. Sontag was supposed right in depicting the metamorphosis, from mere party control to military dictatorship, as the highest and the terminal phase of a regime discredited by history, by political economy, by morality, by common sense and by theory including Marxist theory.
