The article deals with issues concerning the refusal by Toni Smith, senior captain of a Division III women's basketball team at Manhattanville College in New York, to salute the U.S. flag. In explaining her actions, Smith said she can no longer salute the flag for the inequalities she observed in the country. Her solitary, nonviolent protest sparked criticisms from various part of the country. Several merchant marine cadets showed up in her court and asked her to leave the country. Nevertheless, students and faculty at Manhattanville were supportive of her.
