The article examines moral issues concerning the use of torture to extract potentially lifesaving information from captive terrorists and suspected criminals. It cites various reports detailing allegations of torture and inhumane treatment of suspects apprehended since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. The alleged practice by the U.S. government to send its captives to its allies, whose brutal torture methods have been amply documented, is also described. The parallel between terrorism and torture is also discussed. The implications of torture for the democratic norms of a country and for the human rights of a suspect are explored.
