This article looks at the manner in which 2004 U.S. presidential candidates should be evaluated. The presidential race has begun. Donors, who practiced the money primary, choose their favorites and weed out other candidates. The magazine, The Nation, will promote a rival contest--the vision primary--in which candidates are evaluated in terms of how forward-looking their ideas are in these areas: economic and social justice; protection of the environment; values-centered globalization; bust-up of the power club; and strengthening of democracy.
