The article discusses several issues related to television programs and the decline of civilization in the United States. Senator Ernest Hollings looked down November 23 from a ziggurat to lament, all over the Op-Ed page of The New York Times, the destruction of a fabled Ur: "If the TV and cable industries have no sense of shame, we must take it upon ourselves to stop licensing their violence-saturated programming," In fact, there is less violence on network TV than there used to be; because of ratings, it's mostly sitcoms. The worst stuff is the Hollywood splatter-flicks found on premium cable, which means the poor are less likely to be watching.
