The article presents information on the book "Women Strike for Peace: Traditional Motherhood and Radical Politics in the 1960s," by Amy Swerdlow. In early 1968 the radical magazine Ramparts did a cover story on what it dubbed the "women power movement." Ramparts wasn't referring to the emerging feminist movement but to the mobilization of women against the Vietnam War and militarism--a movement it traced back to 1961 when Dagmar Wilson and four others founded Women Strike for Peace. The Ramparts writers lavished praise on these women peace activists whose dismissal of feminism and faith in "the simplistic ability of women to clean up the mess of the world" were found irresistible.
