The article presents information on two books "Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington," by John Edmund Hasse and "The Duke Ellington Reader," edited by Mark Tucker. Hasse has done a workmanlike job of retelling the story of jazz musician Duke Ellington's life and travels and loves. One can get a more rounded notion of both Ellington and his career through Tucker, an associate professor of music. Tucker is insightful, balanced and lucid, so it's good news that he has now edited a thoughtful introduction to the man and his music, "The Duke Ellington Reader."
