The article presents information on the book "Listening to Prozac: A Psychiatrist Explores Antidepressant Drugs and the Remaking of the Self," by Peter D. Kramer. "Listening to Prozac," is a combination of narrative and neuroscience. Kramer introduces readers to individuals whose therapeutic course has been altered by Prozac, and interweaves their stories with science-made-simple lessons in pharmacology, brain anatomy and physiology, and human and animal behavior. While the book gives particular scrutiny to the premise that a certain amount of suffering is requisite to human moral and spiritual growth-and so drugs that lighten that load are inherently suspect.
