Abstract

The Supreme Court Stays Hard Right

The U.S. Supreme Court is consistently hostile to civil rights, almost brutally harsh on those facing the death penalty, rough on criminal defendants in general, much less sympathetic to abortion rights than it was and a mixed bag on free speech and religion. The election of Bill Clinton as U.S. President and the appointment of Ruth Bader Ginusburg to the Supreme court shows the influence of conservatives on the Supreme Court. The Court is indeed taking fewer cases, but that is partly because the lower courts are so dominated by conservatives that the High Court sees less need to review them.
