This article presents information on American tribes. It is informed that apart from a few household names, the more than 500 native American tribes currently recognized as such by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs are virtually unknown to most Americans. Equally unknown is the fact that a complex process must be undergone to acquire legal status as an Indian tribe. At present more than a hundred groups have asked to be recognized as Indian nations; they are willing to undergo a process that can last nearly a decade and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The federal government does not have figures on how many people are represented by these would-be tribes, but partial figures suggest a total of 80,000 to 100,000.
